NAD C588 Belt-Drive Turntable System Preview

Date: 2019-06-03

Late last year NAD electronics introduced a new line of turntables. All three tables in the series – the C 556, C 558, and C 588 – are belt-driven and feature glass platters and MDF plinths. The C 588, at $799, is the top of the line.

And what does that $799 get you? It gets you a plug-and-play record-playing machine with a number of notable features. You get a thick MDF base in attractive matte black, a non-resonant dust cover, and a glass platter with a felt pad. It’s specialized, high-precision synchronous clock motor lets you spin your favorite licorice pizzas at 33 and 45 rpm. And it doesn’t shirk on the resonance control and isolation. It features a carbon fiber tonearm and specially tuned vibration damping feet. And, to top it all off, you get a pre-installed Ortofon 2M Red moving magnet phono cartridge installed on its 9-inch tonearm.

I’m going to spend some quality time with the C 588 and its Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. I’ll try different phono preamps for the cartridge, different platter mats, and different kinds of vinyl to determine just how good it is at making music.
